Mandatory overtime

I've recently started working for a global 1st tier automotive supplier and am already in dispute with the company regards overtime working.
The company follows an unwritten rule where if Jaguar LandRover decide in the week that they will be running at the weekend then whomever is on morning shift must work the Saturday and whomever is working afternoon shift must work the Sunday.
Contractually I do not have anything to this effect written into my contract I was issued with as this counts as rest days (I get paid a desultory amount of overtime for being forced to work weekends but cannot see anywhere where it says I must work restdays).
Can anyone offer myself any advice as to where I stand with this please, my contract does state that my normal working hours are 39 hours per week, and that my job requires myself to work necessary hours unpaid for completion of work duties - is this a catch all meaning I must work all weekend overtime?

Sounds like it, also as you haven't worked two years they could dismiss you fairly easily with little come back.
I would do as they ask and look for another job. I doubt it would but if the extra hours take you under NMW then it would have to be made upto NMW.Don't trust a forum for advice. Get proper paid advice. Any advice given should always be checked0 -
Were you not told about this by Manpower either at the interveiw stage or when you picked up your uniform?
I was told several times that there was compulsory catch up and over time at the weekends if need be.If organized religion is the opium of the masses, then disorganized religion is the marijuana of the lunatic fringe.0 -

The consulting firm recruiting myself was very disingenuous about a variety of the terms and conditions of my employment which I have later found out to my cost, the overtime being one of them- the recruitment agency mentioned paid overtime as a selling point of the job, being a supervisory position - not that it was deemed mandatory by the company hence my grievance.0 -

Some hide this little piece of information to avoid putting you off, its only when you've got your contract you find out.0 -
I don't have specific knowledge of it, but it sounds unfair to me.
Surely the work duties assigned must be able to be completed within normal hours, and if they assign work knowing that it cannot, then they are simply being dishonest.
The fact that their customer deciding to work weekends triggers the requirement to do the weekend work means that it is plainly not part of your normal weekly duties and so cannot be encompassed as so-called "catch-up"work.
But my guess is that the only option you have is to vote with your feet.0
