I've just purchased both the above engines for under £10 delivered. Not the most well known of engines but they appear to have a platform, empty carriage to allow them to carry things around the track ( one of the reasons I purchased them):)

The Chugginton wooden ones are compatible with the Thomas wooden railway so make a cheaper way to add to the engines, as long as your child isn't a Thomas purist! My son chose one of these with his birthday money in the summer so think he will like it.

These look great. I'm after a chuggington or other train related gift for a 4 year old, spending roughly £30 I guess. Any suggestions? Or shall I ask elsewhere?

I think Toys R Us had the best selection of Chugginton railway when I was looking. If you spend over £25, they're offering a free Track Expansion Pack, which goes with the plastic tracks.

So for £28, you could get:
