If you live anywhere near a "better class" of town, charity shops sometimes stock good dresses. Ring round first to see what they've got and to keep an eye out for you.
Also try wedding dress shops - they often have plain bridesmaids dresses (not frou-frou!) and simple evening gowns for sale or hire.

Ask a friend of similar size if she has something in the back of the wardrobe.

Can you be a bit more specific with size/price/desired effect?

Lol, I just posted this on a similar thread, think it will also work for here:

I've got 3 ball/formal dresses - one from Monsoon (in the sale), one from Designers @Debenhams (also in the sale) and one from TK Maxx.
The TK Maxx one was the cheapest, but also the nicest, and the most expensive-looking - both times I've worn it, I've had loads of comments and people asking where I got it from.

'Oh, just a little boutique back home', was obviously the answer I gave, rather than '£39.99 at TK Maxx'! ;)

You've got to be prepared to look though, they don't have many choices, maybe 3 styles in each size, but each store has different stock, so it's always worth trying another if you don't get any luck in the first one!

Get yourself down to Debenhams, I think theres a sale on at the moment aswell. I got a gown last November from the bridel/bridesmaid section for a black tie do, reduced from £90 to £22.

I always manage to find a Ball gown in Monsoon and I'm not sure but I think the sale in there may have just started! :)

Debenhams and TK Maxx are also good places to look!
My second favorite household chore is ironing. My first being, hitting my head on the top bunk bed until I faint.
