Tax owed from being with agency

I've recently received a £400 tax bill from HMRC, I've no idea why - but I'm wondering if it's from when I was working with an agency.
I've requested my details from HMRC and my time with the agency doesn't have an end date - I switched from agency to permanent work with current employer on the 25th February 2013 (new employer is listed with start date)
To matters worse, the agency used Employ-E to pay me - they have gone into liquidation due to dodgy tax evasion.
Can anyone help?

Spend the money I 'apparently' owe them?
Seriously though, is it likely that someone's messed up and I don't owe the money?0 -
Phone the HMRC helpline and ask why they think you owe £400.Their answer will probably give you the information you need; whether it was the agency or Employ-E.0
