Leather sofas and pets

We need to get a new sofa and im thinking of a leather one. As we havent had leather before i was wondering what peoples experiences are who have dogs jumping up and down on them?
Do they mark easy or not? I know it depends on the type of leather and because of having a dog im not buying the expensive soft leather but the tougher (or so ive read) corrected grain buffalo leather.
My dog is not a mad little puppy, hes all grown up now, but likes laying on the sofa and just because it will be a new one, im not one of these people who wont let him on them. Hes one of us and gets to use it the same as us.
Also is it worth taking out the extra cover for accidental damage? We have had our current sofa for about 8 years now and i paid extra for a scotchguard finish and didnt need to claim, its a jacquard material.
Also if we get a leather one will it hurt to keep it in the plastic it gets delivered in for a few weeks as we will be getting work done soon and i dont want it getting knocked about and dirty. I just wondered if it would sweat or something.
