Self Assessment -how long will I wait for my code?

I've been advised by HMRC to register for self assessment as they have decided I owe a small amount of Child Benefit Charge for 12-13. I'm registering late as having spoken to HMRC back in October I was advised that I wasn't affected (its borderline.....).
They are going to send copies of all my paperwork (which was previously sent to them by their request and lost) which I'm sure I will get in a week or two. But having registered for Self Assessment online they're saying 6 to 8 weeks to send me the code I need to do a tax return? Is it likely to take that long (and therefore over the deadline) or was that a blanket statement to cover themselves?
Can fill the tax return in as soon as I get my paperwork back and my code from HRMC. But according to those timescales I'll be late and will pay a fine larger than the tax. Which will of course be my fault for taking the original instruction by HMRC. Anyone got experience of how long the SA250(?) takes to come back?
