How can I pay this tax?

I am retired. I have fixed income and I am not a higher rate tax payer. I recently earned £750 for doing a piece of work for my previous employer. It is a "one off" I do not expect to receive any other payments like this.

Is there a way I can send the taxman a cheque for 20% of £750 without having to go through all the pain of self assesment?

Any help will be much appreciated.
Thanks

Phone the tax man. He will then adjust your code to take into account the extra income.
  • I've had terrible experiences trying to speak with tax people. I fear that the code will be incorrectly adjusted and I will have to phone him again after april to make sure that he doesn't tax me with the adjusted tax code forever!

As you know how much you will need to pay, why not set the money aside and send a cheque when asked ?

Write a letter telling them about the work you have done. They should then issue a calculation and tell you how much to pay etc.
  • thanks all. you seem to be saying I can send a cheque. please consider the original question answered.
