Hi, I'd like a pair of binoculars for trainspotting. I know nothing about them. Where is the best deal at the moment?
They are for a Christmas gift.

I bought a pair of binoculars a few years ago from Lidl but I very rarely use them because they are so heavy. So if you're going to buy a pair for somebody you need to consider the weight. A tripod attachment would be handy as well, to cut down on shake.
A good place to start looking is Amazon because the reviews tend to be a bit more honest than elsewhere.
A price range would help but here's a couple of suggestions to be going on with.
These Olympus binoculars weigh 710g and cost £59 including delivery

These no-name brand binoculars weigh 640g, can be tripod mounted and cost £24.59 including delivery. They get good reviews although some people say they're rather bulky.

Cheap and cheerful may not be the best option, you get what you pay for and the expense is in the lenses.
8 x 30 or 8x40 are excellent field glasses. Once you get into 10x plus magnification they can become heavy and a tripod may be required as they are difficult to hold steady.0
