Different pay rates

Hi All,

Just wondered what others peoples thought were.

I have been with a company for approx 20 years earning an average wage. Pay rises over the last few years have been small or non.

I work in a small team of 3. A main manager not long joined and another person who gained promotion from a different role in the business. (this role involves some of my work, which the person needs to be trained in and other work which i am not fully experienced in. The new role was not advertised so i could not apply).

I found out (by reading something i prob shouldn't have although had full access to) the other people in my team are on double and triple salary of mine, plus other benefits including a decent yearly bonus. I do not get a bonus as I have always been told I work in a department that is not eligible for company bonuses.

Understandably I am upset and feel unfairly treated compared to the rest of my team who are on very good wages and getting bonuses especially as i have been there the longest. Before the other person was took on I asked for a wage increase and was told to wait a year and there will be no future big improvement to my wages.

I find it hard to be motivated now as loyalty seems to have got me nowhere. I thought about asking again for a wage increase but feel i will get turned down again. I also cannot let on I have read what i have.

I have started to apply for other jobs (even though I would be happy to stay) as I feel that will be the only way of getting a good pay rise. I am struggling financially and already have an extra small job. I have not had any replies for any jobs I have applied for yet.

Should i try again for a pay rise or bonus (without being able to mention the rest of the teams bonus) or try and get out if I can? If I cant find another job, how do i cope, doing the bulk of the work, struggling financially & knowing what they are receiving!!!! I am upset about the bonus part as it feels like all my work goes to ensuring the rest of my team get bonuses while i receive nothing!

  • You can certainly ask again, but some companies treat loyalty as a reason for not paying the going rate ie they do not believe you will leave.
If it's pretty much been said to you you can expect no future substantial rises, then it may be worth, when you ask again and are turned down, that your finances are tight, and you may have to think about your future even though you enjoy working for the company. That will be the signal to them that if they want to keep you they need to pay you more. You could also ask them alternatively what you would have to do, or be able to do, in order to gain a pay increase.

Never rely on getting another job then accepting a counter offer from your current employers. The way things have panned out for you in a company in the past is a certain recipe for the way they would pan out in the future IMO.
  • You get promotions by staying in a company, you get pay rises by switching companies.

I made my career within one company, with each promotion I was getting a 10-20% payrise but when you start on little then 120% of little is still little. When I became middle management I was on about half the salary of my peers and most the staff reporting into me were earning more than I was.

Personally, I wasnt bitter as I knew the game and there is no way I'd have gone from being in the call centre to doing what I was any other way. Once I had a strong CV though I jumped ship, went to work for other companies and over the space of 2 years more than tripled my salary.

I still work with some that earn more than me for doing the same job, I earn more than most my peers though. This is life, I am paid more than a fair wage for my work and so I dont begrudge those that have been better negotiating a higher rate than me.
  • An employer will pay as little as possible for as much as possible, an employee will do as little as possible for as much as possible.

A very apt saying for your situation.

Look for a new job. Nothing will change in this one, 20 years has proved that.
