It really depends on what exactly he needs a gaming keyboard for.

If, for example, he is writing lots of complex macros that he needs on-demand without difficult to perform key-combination presses then he will need a keyboard that has lots of programmable extra keys (commonly called 'G' keys on a Logitech branded gaming keyboard).

My gaming keyboard is a Logitech branded one but quite expensive (around £100 - G510) but it has 18 extra programmable keys, plus "M" buttons to switch between programmes so you can have up 54 macros, scripts or other designated commands bound to them.

If you just want a few extra buttons to make it easier to lob some grenades, use a different weapon etc. then the cheaper spectrum of keyboards such as the one linked above, or the Logitech G105 should do the trick.

I've got the Logitech G15 with the macro buttons Tropez mentioned, they're useful for some things but of limited appeal in shooters save for issuing orders. (which you'd generally do over voice coms anyways) I used it mostly for WoW but the LCD screen was useful for things like ammo count & KD info - or if you're using voice coms it had an app to say who's speaking.

Might be an idea to find out what the primary players of his favourite games use (esports teams) - their recommendations might be biased toward their sponsors but they don't use rubbish gear.

  • Logitech has some great gaming keyboards. Avoid Razer if you can, they are very overpriced.

He is likely referring to a mechanical keyboard then as opposed to a 'gaming' keyboard with lots of extra buttons. Razer make very good mechanical keyboards, much better response time but designed for serious/professional gamers.

Don't buy a mechanical keyboard (or at least read some reviews) if he plays in same room as you or plays when you are trying to sleep and is close to your bedroom.
Son has Razer one which is horrendously loud and can be heard in another room with all doors closed, it's truly ridiculous how loud and annoying it is.

    Mechanical keyboards are way better.

but you can get different type of switches on them, so not all of them are loud.
some of them even have silent switches.

if you don't want loud switches, then avoid the Cherry blue switches

My Razor Anansi isn't any noisy than my other keyboard, sure it costs more but I expected that. In fact I just tested it along with Microsoft multimedia and if anything that is louder that the Razor
