Gel eyeliner

Options
Is gel eyeliner preferable to pencil or liquid? I would like to try it but I find liquid a bit harsh and was wondering if this is the same (I am over 50 by the way so don't want anything too harsh).

I prefer gel or liquid. If you dont want something too harsh, maybe go for a brown or charcoal colour rather than black?

Gel is my favourite. You have the smoothness of the liquid but with a greater margin of error :p I was also going to suggest a change of colour - I like dark violet :)

I use the black then soften it with a bit of eyeshadow over the top.
  • I love gel liner, but pencil or eye shadow gives a much softer look. You can draw your line with pencil, then smudge it with shadow to make it look softer and last longer :)
Be thankful for what you have; you'll end up having more. If you concentrate on what you don't have, you will never, ever have enough. ♥

i've had a couple of gel liners & have struggled to get on with them, they dried out quite quickly too. i love eye rimz in purple from laura geller, it can be bold or subtle depending on how you apply & it smudges nicely too. i also use the fantastic little brush to apply a loose shadow in dark metallic grey/navy as liner too, again, subtle or bold as you like.

Without a shadow of doubt the BEST bit if makeup advice I've ever been given was never use black eyeliner unless you really know what you're doing. I always use dark brown - for all intents and purposes it looks black, but not as scary if you don't get it 100% perfect! Nearly 20 years later and I'm still using brown - much prefer it.
  • I am a gel liner convert. I went into MAC looking for a new pencil and somehow came out with a gel eyeliner in a pot and a brush to apply it, I thought I would never get on with it but I find it is easier to apply and doesn't smudge once it is set. Pop into Boots or somewhere with make up counters and ask one of the ladies to help you to try one, they will be more than happy to.
  • I find it easier to use liquid and find it doesnt smudge, where as when I used a pencil eyeliner I would end up looking like a panda. Im another one who will set with eye shadow if I dont want it to look too harsh.
