Help, I'm a facebook nuisance

I found today that things I 'like' or 'comment' on appear in other friends news feeds, even if the other friends are completely unrelated to the 'like'. This means I'm potentially pestering friends with nuisance 'likes' which is not my aim.
I don't understand it though because on my news feed, I never see random 'likes' from my friends. The only thing I see is where a friend's status is 'liked'. ie relevant stuff.

Any facebook experts out there that understand how to limit this?

So I guess if I 'like' a comment whose audience is 'public' all my friends get my like on their feed. That's a pain. Still weird that it doesn't happen to me. ie I don't get pestered with their 'likes'.
