Who pays for the prizes?

Just wondered if anyone can answer this question:
When you have a competition in a newspaper or a magazine and the prize is say a holiday or something from a particular shop, who pays for the prize - is it the newspaper or the holiday company/shop, etc?

I've always assumed it is the provider - certainly when I won my holiday my flight was provided by ryan air & I could only go when they had promotional seats availableproud gran to 4 lovely boys and one little girl0

There is generally a PR company involved who is acting on behalf of a company which is supplying the prize. One of the many reasons things can get convoluted when the people who run the competition aren't quite used to dealing with "when things go wrong"0

I recently won tickets to a WWE event. The competition was run by our local newspaper, but the tickets were provided (to them) by the WWE promotions bit.
But most other things I've won, most seem to come from whoever is doing the PR for the company running the competition.0
