Talking about food on the "butchery" thread has got me thinking about the foods from home that I like and missed when I was in the army. Things you just can't get anywhere else. Once you were back home though and had a good feed of whatever it was you were craving it didn't seem as important anymore.

It's changed a bit in modern times because you can order a lot of food items online which you couldn't do when I was serving but here are some of the things we craved:

Vegetable roll
Steak sausage
Tayto crisps
Potato bread
Potato apple bread
Soda bread
Wheaten bread
Bushmills whiskey

What have I left out? I know I didn't include poundies, champ or colcannon but you can make these things anywhere. What floats your boat when it comes to traditional dishes?

Totally - poor man's food. The sort of thing we were raised on. How many times when you were young, before the advent of late night takeaways did you "put the pan on" when tripping home from the boozer at 10.30pm?

We would have had that at least once a week when i was wee.

My dad used to put hot milk round his too, which was weird.

You can eat most of it anywhere (well the breads anyway) - just make it yourself - ingredients are widely available!

I was always crazy about tayto cheese and onion as soon as I landed in Belfast airport after working away I'd buy some along with Sukie (Not sure if you get in England now though - maybe you can?)
