Chasing up HR after job interview?

Some of you might remember that I posted about my references being taken up for a potential job that I had been interviewed for before being offered the post.
Anyway. I was told that I would hear by the end of last week (at the interview). The interview was last Tuesday and I haven't heard anything other than the fact that they have been collecting references for all candidates interviewed (3 of us)
I haven't heard a thing since. I am assuming at this stage that I have been unsuccessful but its very frustrating not to get a final confirmation (particularly this has been a fairly arduous process involving a 10 minute presentation and then an hours face-to-face interview). Should I email HR and do a little gentle chasing up or just leave it be and move on?
My thoughts are they have probably offered the job to someone and am waiting for acceptance or some other process to be completed before finally turning down the other two applicants. Is is likely that I might not hear back from a job interview in the same way people never seem to hear back from an unsuccessful initial job application these days?
The job was a research post at a university if that makes any difference.
Thanks for any help/advice

No harm in emailing them asking for any news - use it as a tool to reconfirm your keenness on the position too, you enjoyed it, liked meeting X and Y etc etc
Be super-polite and friendly (I'm sure you would anyway), and stay away from "you said this would happen at this date" type language.
Good luck!Spend what is left after saving. Don't save what is left after spending0 -
Yes why not contact HR and ask if theres any update, you might not even get a response from that.0

Hi there melysion
I’d be inclined to get back in touch. You can be really tactful about chasing this up, and maybe stress how interested you are in the job role and in working for the university. If you find they’ve given the job to another candidate, you could then ask for some feedback on how you performed in the interview (if you think it’d be helpful for you, going forward).
Fingers crossed you get offered the job!

Yeah I did that yesterday and no reply. I can't believe that employers now consider it acceptable to not get back to you even after an interview these days but I guess times change. Incredibly rude but nothing else I can do other than chalk it up to experience I guess
