PayPal Now Charges 5% ??? Are there alternatives? Have I been over-charged?

Hi,
I just took a PayPal payment from an Australian client. I invoiced him for £,109.00. The Paypal fee was an unbelievable £49.90... Is this normal for Paypal? I wouldn't usually take Paypal (bank wire is preferred), but it was that or lose the sale.
I thought the Paypal rate was more like 3%? 5% is a large slice of my margin. Had I known I wouldn't have bothered.
For the rare instances where clients must pay with a card, is there an alternative that doesn't require heavy subscription fees?
Thanks in advance.

There is the "standard" fee of 3.4% + 20p plus a "cross border" fee of 1.5%

When on earth did the 'cross border fee' come about? I don't remember being charged 5% before. It seems staggeringly expensive... Utter rip off.0
