cavity wall insulation

can anyone give me an idea of how much it can cost to put cavity wall insulation into a 4 bedroomed detached house. this is my daughter's first winter in her new(to her) house and she is going through oil like a band playing.

I thought cavity wall insulation might be an idea but we need a rough idea of cost.

No, but I believe there's a £150 grant available towards it from NIE... search for the Energy Savings Trust Northern Ireland.

power ni do cavity wall insulation grants and they say it costs around £370 for a 3 bedroom house; http://powerni.co.uk/saving-energy/insulation/free-insulation/
  • We had ours topped up (4 Bed Detached) for £300 and got the £150 cash-back through the Energy Savings Trust Northern Ireland a few years ago. That was a rockwool type insulation top up though, not sure what a whole house would cost if none currently in the cavity and you were starting from scratch.

Be Aware! if there is already some in the cavity, you have to inject the same type of insulation in to top it up. You CANNOT put the new bead type stuff in on top of the wool type stuff and vice-versa, they both work in completely different ways.

Cheaper still, make sure the loft is insulated first, this is cheaper, easier and works like a charm, with no problems afterwards. Wickes do cheap stuff already rolled.

Google problems with cavity wall insulation, if things go wrong, it can be 10 times worse than before.

yes I have suggested the usual, boiler service, loft insulation, heavy curtains etc. just it seems quite a lot of money 500 litres in 5 weeks. think she is getting chimney opened up to use coal in addition to oil.

Not sure that's a great idea. Any time the fire isn't lit then the heat losses from the oil fired radiators will be increased. And coal is much the same price as oil anyway but much more hassle - http://www.nottenergy.com/energy_cost_comparison/.
