Banking large euro cheque

Hi,
My mum recently recieved a court settlement for an accident she had a few years ago abroad. The cheque is over 20,000 euro and Im looking for some advice on how to get the best rate of exchange into Sterling so she doesnt loose out with such a large amount of money changing.
My mum is a pensioner and doesnt have a bank account, she saves in a local credit union who, she tells me, were not keen on giving out her savings previously and always encouraging her to take loans.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated
