Low cost, easy, Christmas party/buffet food

I love having little finger buffets over the Christmas period, but due to a severe lack of money this year I can't just nip to Iceland and buy most of the party food from there, so I wondered what ideas people could give me that are cheap, easy and fairly quick to make?

I have a cheap freezer food shop near me in Birmingham which always sells cheap frozen puff and short crust pastry so I intend to get some of that and they also get some cheap party food in around now as well as really cheap Pizzas.

I'm just lacking in culinary creativity this year, but I'm excited to see what can be made from very little money.

Mini toad in the holes, really easy and cheap to do. Potato wedges, chicken wings.. tbh making your own can be rather pricey especially as most supermarkets have deals on party food.

Hmmm, maybe I'll have to do a bit of both. It's sad to think that freshly made stuff can be more expensive than pre packaged frozen food. Sad times.

Buy some 'double duty' veg. Get in potatoes, carrots, onions, white cabbage to have with main meals. From these you can make

HM Coleslaw- onion, grated, carrots, white cabbage mixed with mayo.

Potato wedges - experiemnt with flavours, we like cajun (spice) and honey and garlic (granules or powder)

German potato salad - thinly slice an onion, put in bowl with sliced gherkins, cook new potatoes, add potatoes to bowl. The heat from the potatoes slightly 'cooks' the onion. When cold mix with mayo.

All these would be an accompaniment to pizza slices.

btw- you'd find loads of ideas for eating well but thriftily on the old style board.
  • onion bhajis, pakoras, mini falafel are all fairly cheap to make. could serve them with a yoghurt, mint and spring onion dip.

    And now the final frame

I have done loads of buffets, and those part baked baguettes always fly of the table. I put things like chorizo sausage and salami with cucumber tomato and mayo in them.Get from Aldis /Lidls. Cut them into 3 so 1 packet at 39p, does 6 rolls and a packet of salami/chorizo is about 99p and does about 18 rolls.

I also do a mince and pasta dish that is really cheap to do, with a salad and a packet of croquet potatoes.

  • Thanks guys. I'm going to try mini baked potatoes too with sour cream and chives. Had them recently and loved them. (Got the midnight munchies now).
