  • I don't kow if this is any help, but a 'friend' had same problem, was self employed and managed to slip through the tax net completely. When he reached 32 he found himself getting scared and contacted them. They were fine and said as they couldn't work out what he owed they would produce a guesstimate. He was billed for about £3k, not that much really and certainly not bankruptcy stuff. He was allowed to pay it in installments too, i believe.
Maybe take a deep breathe and go for it and call them.
The first time we said hello, was the first time we said goodbye. As the angels took your tiny hand and flew you to the sky-you forever left us breathless. RIP my beautiful granddaughter :(

    Hi neko et al,

Sorry-am a bit 'new' to the forum & keyboard goes before brain engages (!) Of course Joe should get lots of proper advice BEFORE the BR.

I was so so so scared re: the tax/ni which is why I highlighted it. Call the number on this link http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/taxbenconf/index.htm it's all confidential & they will help you a)-get an idea of what's owed & any possible payment plan they can arrange & b)-If you DO devide to commence payments to them & don't go BR the very fact you've called & addressed the issue will greatly go i your favour.

I don't know the OP's other circumstances & if indeed much more is owed but proper advice is needed.

In my case I owed another FIVE TIMES ehat I owed in tax/ni-& this was driving me to the edge anyway-which is why my advisor said 'why stir them up' (as it would just be extra stress).

Apologies-should have made the context of this statement clearer.

Hope this is some help, Joe!
