Uk tax return minimum income

Options
Hi,

Last year I arrived to uk from Spain, and started working in december 2012. My earnings before 05/04 were 11000£. I know the personal allowance for 2012/2103 was 8105£. My doubt is, is there any limit in the total income during a tax year (in this case 2012/2013) above which you need to fill the uk tax return form, or do you have to fill it even if your earnings were below the personal allowance¿
Thanks for your help.
Gonzalo

A bit over simplified - but you do not normally need to fill in a tax return if you don't owe any tax.

If you do owe tax then you need to make arrangements to pay it - this does not always involve a tax return but can be done by correspondence with the tax office.

If you are paying tax under PAYE with the right tax code then you won't need to do a tax return

BTW there's a cutting tax forum where this might better have gone - more likely to get correct replies there
  • Thanks a lot for your answer dzug1. I have just been checking the ux tax return requirements in the HMRC web and found out the rules. It is very different from Spain where, if you earn above 22000€ you must do the tax return. Here if you pay your taxes through PAYE, with the right tax code, and dont earn above 100k (5 times bigger than in Spain), you dont have to fill it (excluding some special cases).
Sorry for posting in the wrong forum¡
    Thanks again.

  • You have to fill in a tax return for all income regardless of whether you actually need to pay any tax - if you are employed the employer would do it all for you but if you are self employed you need to complete it yourself
    Jan 2010 - Overdraft £9,500 / Credit Cards £5,000 / Loan £9,500 / Mortgage £128,000
    Jun 2010 - Overdraft £0 / Credit Card £0 / Loan £0 / Mortgage £125,250
    Oct 2011 - Overdraft £7,000  / Mortgage £115,295
    Dec 2014 - Overdrafts 15,000 / Credit Cards 16,000 / Loans 25,000 / Cars 18,000 / Mortgages 232,500
  • Thanks laurasavon, I am not self empoyed but employed by a company, so the company will do it for me. I am glad to have learnt this, it is much easier than in Spain.

  • You only need to do a tax return in certain circumstances and most can be found http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/sa/need-tax-return.htm

As an employee you wont typically have to do a tax return until you earn over #100,000. If however you are required to do a tax return because you are self employed or a company director etc then you must do one even if your earnings is only #1
  • hi
you will need to get registered if you self employed.Self employed people a responsible for paying their own tax
    Hope that helps
