I bet spam would be fab for cutting!! I bet you'd have a job trying to mould the egg substitute though!!
What else could you put into a wartime bento?? I might have a go on Monday . . .

Funnily enough, I've seen spam in bentos - google for spam musubi. It's kinda like spam sushi

Im blown away by the imagination of it all really, packed lunches nowadays are so inspiring compared with what I had. My typical lunches all the way from aged 5 to 11 were:

Sandwiches (white bread) - ham, turkey or pate
Chocolate bar - gold bar, breakaway or trio
Ocassional crisps were either frazzles, frisps or hula hoops

If mum had a day off she always made me a prawn cocktail and in winter I had oxtail soup.

I seriously cannot remember anything else in my lunch boxes, fruit was a definite nono for me.

Fortunately I ate healthy in the evening really because now I retell my lunches they were really not very healthy!

The yoghurt is in a silicone baking cup and when the lid is put onto the bento box it forms a nice seal. Also, my sons packed lunch bag has a handle on the top so everything is carried upright, and he's actually quite careful with it (for a 5 year old!!). The silicone baking cups are fab! I usually put a couple in for him - one with yoghurt, and one with dried fruits or chopped fresh fruits

I just used to put in wee notes to say - have a good day. eat your lunch, we love you. See you this afternoon when you get home etc etc. School had a policy that no lunchbox food was binned - excellent! Never had the feeling my kids sussed it out and binned stuff post lunchtime - uneaten food had to come home. Not much came home as always tailored to taste and fortunately eaten! I used to make up evening before as still fresh in the morning. Never really had any complaints. It was generally easy to do as they weren't difficult to feed. Sannies, yoghurt, drink, fruit etc. No treats at lunchtime - kept for after dinner - they are now 28 and 26!!!

    Hope this helps.

I survived 6 years of primary school on salad cream or pickle sandwiches and trio bars. A yogurt was considered adventurous. I don't think my little mind could have coped with such variety.

As for now, I wouldn't want to ruin it by eating it!

Where did you get your box, and the picks & other containers. I've only managed the silicon cup cake cases so far?

There's a recipe in We'll Eat Again by Marguerite Patten (the original domestic goddess) for curried corned beef balls. They're just corned beef, breadcrumbs and curry powder fried crisp. I think they'd be fab in a bento with a couple of Spam spitfires, some carrot sticks and a few apple peeelings arranged artfully.:D
