wedding venue problems

Options
Hi All
New here

we are having a few issues with our venue that we have booked and payed for.

we went to the venue last week to ask how much the corkage fee was, as when we booked we were told we were allowed to bring in our first drinks only then use the bar provided.
to which the reply we got was you are not allowed to bring in any alcoholic drinks, then we got told that this includes soft drinks, again when we booked we were allowed to bring in soft drinks,

after this we got asked how many people will be arriving and we said that it will be 100, to which reply we got was that the venue will not fit 100 people.

then we asked the same questions as when we booked,

fireworks - no, when we booked was yes
a room for the bride to change - no, when we booked yes
use of the kitchen fridges - no, when booked was yes
leaving time - 2300 last drinks 2200, when booked last orders 2300

and so it went on.

on our agreement it says that there is 100 guests attending
that is the main thing as we have had to limit the guest list to accommodate this now we are getting the gist that we will have to reduce this further which we cannot do.

if we cancel the booking we would loose all the money paid.

is it a breach of contract if they cannot accommodate the number of guests as stated on the agreement, and can we get our money back because of this

thanks in advance

  • What does your contract say? If it says 100 people they have to either honour it or give you your money back. As for the other things, did you get it in writing that you could bring your own drinks, have fireworks or a room to change? If not I don't think you've got a leg to stand on with it I'm afraid xxx

  • thanks Trixsie1989

the main item was the number of guests, was in a bit of a rant with the other items, should have got the rest in writing,
  • No problem, I can understand why your upset. Will they cater for your 100 or do you have to find elsewhere? Have you got wedding insurance? X

  • hi Trixsie1989

just to let you know we spoke to a family friend who knows the legal stuff and he confirmed what you said about the numbers, and gave me a paragraph to say over the phone

"So you cannot perform your obligations as per the contract so you have committed a Fundamental breach in this case you are unable to accommodate the numbers as stated in the contract. Due to this breach you have failed to perform the contract in accordance with the terms stated. because of this we require a full refund as the venue is no longer able to accommodate the numbers stated and booked"

after being on the phone for about 10 minutes they have agreed to give us a full refund :j

thanks Trixsie1989 for your help :T

now to look for a new venue and to make sure to question everything in the contract
  • It's ok I had similar problems with a contract for a house rental agreement so I know my stuff and always read the small print. Just make sure everything they tell you you can have is put in writing before you pay a penny. Glad you got your money back though :-) xxx

  • FOLLOW UP WITH A LETTER!!!! Stating everything that was said to you in the telephone call, and the name of the person you spoke to, and re - iterate the paragraph stating the law regarding this and keep a copy, send it by registered mail to the person you spoke to or the owner/manager.
  • Glad your getting it sorted. I've had this sort of problem with our venue we booked for 60 day guests when having a second meeting with the venue 18 months after booking we were told we're only allowed 50 they wanted to then charge us an extra £200 so I gave them what for and the bill got reduced by around £900 :)

I hope you find a new venue soon
