CRAs are allowed to hold any data about you that is deemed in the public interest or in the public domain. Things like Bankruptcy Orders and Discharges, CCJs, IVAs, etc. are public information, and you cannot stop CRAs holding this information. You can ask them to mark them as settled, but they do have legal right to hold JUST these on their records because there are actual Laws that allow them to do so, and judges have signed the Orders in all these types of cases. However, agreement 'defaults' do NOT come under those Laws, unless they have been progressed to a CCJ, etc.
There is a more indepth explanation surrounding this statement but my point is that once a default is satisfied a CRA has no 'legal' right to continue to process default data.

I believe that credit organisations should contact you to warn you that they are going to apply a default status to your account. They may well have done this but if it was sent to a previous address, this will not have been received by you.
So darich, is the default down as settled?
Reference your query about applying a Notice of Correction on your credit record, I can't find a link online. Might be worth doing the following (from the creditexpert site):

Yes - it's down as settled. When i spoke to BOS they are also happy that the account is settled. My credit report shows the 5 missing payments but then it goes green where i've cleared it - it was less than £10 so it wasn't exactly difficult to clear the bill in one fell swoop!!
No one is chasing me for any money, nor am i in arrears with anything. I'd just like to have the missing payments removed from my record if at all possible given that the amount is so small.
I'm pretty sure that any potential lenders will not have access to the amount of money that was not paid so I need to either leave a note on my file or get them removed altogether.

Update on the credit rating.......
Thanks to some excellent help and advice (thanks Sam) i've written to BOS and so far they've acknowledged my letter but will notify me of the outcome of my complaint within 4 weeks.
Hopefully by the end of next month i'll have it cleared up and it means my g/f and i can get switch cards on our joint account instead of cash cards!!
I'll post here again with news

Update
I sent BOS a letter quoting some stuff from the Data Protection Act and that i believed they were in the wrong and committing an offence by processing my data.
They replied yesterday saying that they had never processed any data from June 2006 when the account was closed. They also informed me that CRAs can hold info for up to 6 years.
However..........as a gesture of goodwill they notified Experian and my defaults have been removed.
:):)
I expect it was because the amount of money involved was really just loose change but had it been for several months or happened several times then they'd have stuck to their guns.
I owe a big thanks to Sammy - if i knew where you lived and it was nearby i'd buy you a drink!!
Many thanks to those who offered advice but especially Sammy who sent me some great info and a letter template.
thanks again all!
