I also freeze it but in this weather (hot here) I keep the loaf/part loaf I am using in the fridge, especially now it's homemade bread as it's not got the nasty preservatives in etc so goes off quicker.
One day I might be more organised...........

    Hi ya,

But also after reading a lot of the old style threads i've been brave and started making my own flapjacks and yesterday made my 1st ever ever ever shortbread with toffee sauce to which my neighbour said and i quote

    What a compliment, congratulations Steph!!

I'm another who says freeze your bread. Alternatively you could buy a smaller loaf. Also check the "use by" date on bread so that you're not buying something that's been on the shelf a few days already. Have a rummage at the back of the display as that's where the freshest loaves go.

We had a similar problem when we used to buy Asda's baked in store sliced loaves, we changed the source and the problem went!

When I lived alone, I always put bread in the freezer and took out slices a few minutes before I wanted them, or made up sandwiches and froze them like that.

Charlene, try defrosting them on biscuit cooking racks so no moisture builds up under the bread.

... don't tell my OH though he says bread in the freezer comes out wet when defrosted so I just do a sneaky beaky, he's never even noticed...:rotfl:

My bread always soggy when defrosted! What's your secret? I end up defrosting it on end and then throwing the bottom slice away. If I do it on a rack then its dried out/going stale :(

I am not sure why it comes out ok maybe its because I always open the bag when defrosting...

I have one of these from Ikea - it is about the right size for a loaf & has a grid at the bottom, so good for putting freshly baked bread in, or defrosting frozen bread.

actually you can see it better on this page, as I can't get the picture to appear on that one....

Hi, just wanted to add that I stopped buying from Asda due to the amount of food we were wasting by it going stale/ mouldy or just not tasting as good, after 2- 3 days. I now buy from Waitrose and despite higher prices for their goods, I am spending less because I can rely on the goods to keep long enough for me to use them up . I keep all my bread on the top shelf of the fridge, if it is a bit cold I take it out half an hour before use and leave it to 'breathe' on the kitchen counter,( in the bag but untied) which deals with the soggy slices problem. I haven't found any make of bread that will keep for longer than 4 days without refrigerating it (in humid weather). I just wish I was organised enough to get up early and put the breadmaker on......Thank you all for the helpful tips, best wishes from Jandy
