Family/close relatives

Does anyone else have a hubby/wife/mam/dad/son/daughter ect that works for a big company that regularly does good competitions?

The reason I ask is my hubby drives the 18 wheels for Asda and I just happened to be doing an Asda competition last night when the T&Cs caught my eye (I don't normally read them...I know I'm baaaaad :o) and read that family/close relations of Asda employees are not allowed to enter :(

Why? If it is a random drawer, can you possibly cheat?
The only thing I can think of would be gossips saying "Oh her hubby works for Asda and she has won blah, blah, blah.."

I wonder if they even check?

So my question is...Do you enter comps for companys a close member of your family work for?

I personally have decided not to enter any more Asda comps as if I won and I was disqualified I think that would be worse than not winning at all ;)

I enter Holland & Barratt ones, my son is a manager for them - but they don't mention an exclusion - if you want to see what can happen if employes are allowed to enter some comps watch Christmas on Chestnut street

I can't enter Argos or some Nectar competitions as I work for Homebase and we support Nectar. I think it's unfair as I have nothing to do with the draw.

It's because competition winnings are tax free. If employees were allowed to win their own company's competition, then this could potentially be used as a way to avoid income tax and national insurance.

I think it's because of the associated bad press. It wouldn't matter if you won legitimately, there will always be people who would think otherwise and kick up a fuss which would create bad press for the company, create doubt in customers and compers eyes and possibly lead to investigations. All of which would have the exact opposite effect of the promotion. It's just not worth the hassle.

This is the real reason. In much of the world all comp winnings are taxable as income - which is why many of the American comps give a precise valuation of the prize. Companies here even have to follow strict rules for things like giving an employee a watch for 25 years service.

It would be easy for a company of say 10 employees to hold a prize draw to win 1 of 10 £500 Debenhams vouchers and so avoid the tax and NI.

Some companies do run prize draws for their employees - often alongside one for the general public, but they will have to make some arrangement with HMRC to pay what is due. Tesco is one and their employee comps sometimes make it onto MSE - see HERE
