Do I go cold turkey? Help please

Silly question at this time of year I know, but I will be away for five months and no Internet for most of it as I will be at sea, but how do you stop comping once you have been bitten by the bug. I have always entered draws and then 18 months ago found by chance this site the rest is history as I am sure you will agree, but the question is I have five weeks until I go away so is it a case of cold turkey and try to forget I have the net at home right away, do I wait until l leave home and do it then, or do I just try cutting back?
If I was a smoker I could get a patch is there one for this addiction.
Many thanks for the help I am sure someone can sort me out, and thank you to all those who have fuelled my addiction.

:eek::eek: I can feel the cold sweats coming just thinking about it. Don't know enough about this to advise you, but have you considered a dongle? First time I heard about it, I thought it was a medical condition :o

I did a quick Google and found this:

Seems it depends how far out at sea you are, and possibly on whether you could use a different type that might pick up a signal from a satellite? Have you checked with anyone what might/not be available on the ship? Assuming it's a cruise, and not your own boat, that is.

Another suggestion, when I moved home I comped using my brother's address for anything that would end after my move date, so that wins would still get to me.

I could ask him if he'll do that for you ;) Or perhaps you have someone else who could take in prizes for you.

Well all I can say is I was away this week for 4 days and Ive gotten myself into a right mess, over 100 pages to catch up on before the Advents! eek so my advice would be forget about it, if you find a way and the time to enter go for it, otherwise enjoy your time away, Ive had a fab few days but this weekend will require some serious work on catching up x

Realistically any internet access whilst at sea will be expensive (as via satellite) and any access you do get you will probably want to use for contact with home. You might get time in port at internet cafes and the like where you can comp. My advice would be forget the competitions completely (it won't be as bad as you expect because you have no choice) or search out the effort ones before you leave which finish whilst away and spend time at sea working on these and enter as and when you can.

Also take the opportunity to get lots of fantastic photos to use in future photo competitions. Where are you off to? Good luck and have fun. My OH used to do these 5 month trips - has lots of tales!!
Don't put it down, put it away - thanks Valli

Thank you to all who post competitions & help the smooth running of the comps board
  • I was comping for 16 months or so when I stopped. I found I had no time as I got myself a job. I didn't really think about it. Now I dont have a job again Im back into it.

For me it just didn't enter my head.

Shock Horror! That reminds me of when I had to go into hospital for a small op last year - I was in three days - and before my admission I had to call the hospital to confirm they had wireless internet service so I could comp from my hospital bed! I actually think I might have cancelled my op if they hadn't! EEEK! Luckily they did have wireless so I was able to logon and comp from my hospital bed!!! I did get into trouble from the nurses though - who thought it was too late to be online at 1am when I was supposed to be in recovery! If I was in your shoes I would go would go on the long term sick or break my leg on purpose (that's because I am weak!) 5 months is a long time - but if you do it and you survive then GOOD FOR YOU! YOU WOULD BE A WINNER IN YOUR OWN RIGHT :)

  • Rum. Isn't there supposed to be lots of that on boats? Take up drinking.

Sorry xx Seriously, you'll be fine. No doubt all the comps that happen whilst you are away will be boring and not worth winning and the moment you're back and start comping again you will win the most FABULOUS prize - I just know it.

Take care wherever you are going.
