Decorating a Dalek cake

I bought a dalek cake mould from Lakeland a few months ago and have successfully made a couple of plain cakes using the suggested 8 egg recipe.
Now though I want to try and decorate the next one I'm making. I want to make a red and black dalek. Can I use red ready roll icing (and if so will one packet be enough) and then black food paint for the details with silver for the antennae. Again can anyone help with quantities?
I've never tried to decorate a cake anything like this before so any help or advice is welcome.

Yes you can use ready to roll icing, I would say you'll probably need two packs though as that mould looks pretty big (assuming it's this one). You could use white icing (which is cheaper than red) and spray paint it with Dr Oetker gold or silver spray, you can get it in the supermarkets. I think there's also a bronze version.
You'll need to cover the cake with a layer of buttercream first, so the ready to roll icing has something to stick to.
Also I would suggest using cake release spray to make sure that all the details come out intact and don't get stuck to the mould.

Hi, not a reply as such but a friend bought the same mould and her cakes come out burnt on the side and not cooked through. Can you tell me the secret to a successful cake please.0

We cooked it very slowly for quite a long time (about 90 minutes at 160) and put a piece of foil over it after about half an hour. Also remember to grease the tin well. We used Flora cooking liquid (can't remember exactly what it's called) and made sure it was pushed into all the holes.

I decorated mine with white icing and black panels - it took one 500g pack of white icing and some black icing and I used a little silver and gold edible silk for highlighting.

You are getting much better replies than this, but I want to share my very first foray into novelty cake making was in 1964 when I made a Dalek cake for my sister.
I made 4 sponges: 2 x 7" & 2 x 6" and cut one of each a little smaller so that when I sandwiched them together with jam, they sloped.
I covered it with buttercream & decorated with chocolate buttons & silver balls. I recall trying the make the "eye" with a stick of angelica & a cherry, and ended up pushing a cocktail stick through the angelica to strengthen it.
In such simpler times everyone was so impressed and I was so proud! How I love todays strong colours & icing pens to make life easier! On a practical level - try going into your local cake decorating / sugar shop (everywhere has one) and ask advice - they are very good.0 -

Thanks, your cake looks great. Was it difficult to decorate, or is it just fiddly? I've never tried to decorate anything like this before so I'm a complete novice.0 -

Thanks. I was really pleased with how my Dalek cake turned out. I am a novice at using Royal icing too (except for the Doctor Who biscuits I made earlier that week) - it took a little while for me to decorate my Dalek but wasn't difficult.
First of all I rolled the white icing really thin (use icing sugar to dust countertop and rolling pin if it is a bit sticky). Then I coated the bottom half of the cake in butter icing (a very thin layer just to help the Royal icing stick), cut the Royal icing to approximate size and layer it gently on. Then I smoothed it out, especially around the round panels. Repeat for the upper white section and the top. Next I did the black horizontal panels in the same way (bottom, middle, top) & let this all dry overnight.
For the black round panels I cut out rolled icing to the correct size using a cutter I made from cut-up plastic bottle stuck into circle with sticky tape. I put each circle into the Dalek cake mould to shape its curve easily, then stuck them onto the Dalek just using water to dampen the icing & make it stick. I did the same with the black rectangular panels, cut by knife this time.
The thin white detailing is just rolled icing, cut very thinly and stuck on with water.
For the weapons & viewing eye, I moulded Royal icing around a piece of spaghetti broken to the correct length.
Once all dry, I highlighted the panels with silver edible silk and the lights at the top with gold.
