Hi
I am shortly to be starting a new job with the NHS, I have been signing on for four months, so am very grateful for being given this chance. My post involves a 40 minute train journey costing in the region of £15 per day, unless I buy a season ticket which is £200 for a month, my question is this, can I get any help with the travelling expenses from the jobcentre until I get my first payday. Any help anyone can give me will be greatly appreciated.

When I signed off after finding a job I asked my advisor if there would be anything to help me in the interim between signing off and being paid (don't ask, don't get etc) and I was eligible for a one off back-to-work grant of £100. I think it was to cover expenses such as new clothes, but this might be a start.
  • Your better of asking the Jobcentre, they seem to go on about discretionary funds so I figure it could vary in different towns, I've only ever been offered interview cost help. That said I did hear of someone on the same work trial being paid on production of public transport receipts and they weren't the sort to be reserved, so I agree with other poster

Just tried looking on direct.gov but notice it is all 'might's', definitely worth an ask at the Jobcentre? hope payday won't be to far normally December is a shorter wait for pay because of xmas? or has that been done away with now, oh dear note to self the temp job has never seemed so attractive!

All the best, perhaps you can post up how you get on :)

I will get paid salary last working day before Christmas...it's made out to be some sort of perk to help us over the festive period, but it's just because payroll closes, and makes January seem about 6 weeks long!

I think this would have been a job grant and only payable where claiming jsa or other benefit for 6 months or more. You should definitely ask, as if you don't ask you don't get, but I don't know of any automatic entitlements.

There is an advisor discretionary fund, I was given £250 back to work help + the cost of one work uniform in the form of a voucher.

As suggested, if you don't ask, you don't get :)

If you are going to be a NHS employee then ask them about their Season Ticket loan scheme. They operate a system where they will loan you the money to buy an annual public transport season ticket and then you pay it back in equal 1/12ths over the following 12 months. You might find this cheaper and more convenient.

Its amazing how these banks can't even do simple calculations correctly..............
  • Following on from my original post, asking if I could claim any travel expenses until paid in a new job, I have today signed off in preparation for starting work on Monday, I got back all my travel expenses for visits to interview, informal visit, taking documantation to my new HR Dept, I asked about help with travel expenses until I get paid, which might not be until the end of January, and although all grants etc have been done away with, they have kindly offered me a half price rail card to help me instead. So thanks for all the helpful posts.

Because the NHS is Civil Service, your wages will probably be a month lying on. So at the end of January you'll receive the money for work done in December.

The NHS is not part of the Civil Service. Pay day is the 25th of the month and you'll be paid on that day for that month, not a month in lieu.
