You need to remember that although you are covered by the Equalities Act 2010, because of your cancer, your employer can still dismiss you on grounds of capability - ie you cant do the job you are being paid to do.
I hope this doesnt happen and I also hope you beat the cancer.

Just because you have cancer doesn't give you a free ticket to keep your job for months/years while off sick. I say up to a month or two for something like cancer is reasonable, but if you're going to be off sick for 3+ months it's normal for an employer to sack you on grounds of incapability. Unlike maternity leave you don't have a fix date you'll be back, and cancer having a low survival rate makes the general populace assume you probably won't come back from sick leave. That's the uncompassionate but realistic view.
