One of the best benefits of honey is that when you include honey in your diet is promotes weight loss. This can be achieved by using honey as an alternative to refined sugar and artificial sweeteners. So instead of adding sugar to your beverages or cereals, add honey instead. However, please remember that it should be used sparingly, since one tablespoon contains approximately 63 calories.

And it also causes tooth decay, just like sugar.

And an apple a day rots your teeth. Unless of course you brush them.

However, honey is anti bacterial so does it really cause tooth decay? Here's an article.

Apple eaten whole is not a problem for tooth decay. Apple juice is a problem as the sugar released causes decay ..

Honey is a massive problem with tooth decay and it also causes erosion of enamel. It is as bad for teeth as coca cola or table sugar http://www.pediatricsdigest.mobi/content/116/4/921.full

The manuka honey study is based on one Indian study which is not peer reviewed and is questionable scientifically.

Just because it's natural doesn't mean it cannot cause problems. Honey is responsible for alot of decay in adults and children who think it's the healthy option but the fructose sugar is easily used by mouth bacteria to cause decay.

An apple a day will not rot your teeth. For one thing, it is just ONE thing. secondly, the fruit sugar in an apple is bound up in the cell structure, so unless it is pulverised into juice, it's not too bad.

Brushing your teeth straight after an apple though, with an apple being a bit acidic, will cause erosion of the enamel (Although again, if we're just talking one apple - it's not going to be a problem what you do - many apples, and it would have an effect) Saliva fixes acid damage, but needs about 30-45 mins to do it. If you brush your teeth in that time, then you are damaging the softened enamel before the saliva can fix it.

Now - honey as an antibacterial.

Yes - honey in a pot will not have bacteria growing in it for the same reason jam doesn't. The concentration of sugar is just so high that it is poisonous to bacteria - so yes, it's antibacterial.

But, once you spread it on some bread, and put it in your mouth, it dilutes, and just becomes a sugary solution that bacteria will feed off very well.

So - honey does cause tooth decay. Many a 'new age' person has been caught out by this! I have put their fillings in, and explained why they have happened!

  • I like honey but only natural one from trusted bee keepers. Most of stuff you can buy in supermarkets hardly tastes like real honey. Is it healthy? Well, for sure more healthy than table white sugar but also high caloric as table sugar.
  • Honey is recocnised by your body as nothing more than a sugar overdose. Its just another form of sucrose . No health benefits whatsoever. dont bother with these poisons.

Like sucrose it contains alarge amount of fructose which is metabolised in teh body to a fat. Not good for weightloss.
