I need some help. I'm looking to buy a plasma TV for about £2,000. I want to extend the warranty to 5 years, but the cheapest quote I've got is £500 (25% of the TV!!). Does anyone know where I can find cheaper, reliable extended warranty?

thats probably close to the standard price for extended warranty, on a £3/400 TV prices from domesticgeneral(www.domgen.com) are around the £90 mark so again 25%. Guess the difference is that Plasmas are probably seen as more unreliable still being a newish product on the mass market. Only other option is to find one that John Lewis sell and try an dget a price match and their free 5 year warranty0

Many credit cards offer free extended warranty for 1 year. Nationwide, for example as far as I remember. This is much better than 1% cashback! Check your cards or apply for a new one.0

Try John Lewis, all TV's come with a free 5 yr warrantyUnless it is damaged or discontinued - ignore any discount of over 25%0

That was going to be my suggestion. As long as it costs over £50 and you register it within 60 days then it is covered. However they wouldnt accept my DVD recorder.0 -
as Paul the Painter says, if you can get John Lewis to price match, you can also get a 5yr warranty for free.
Otherplaces you can try for warranties are https://www.av-sales.co.uk (they also sell plasmas and have a very good reputation) and https://www.nexnix.co.uk (were our plasma came from and extended warranty - after manufactures one had ran out too)
check out the plasma forum at https://www.avforums.com for more plasma related stuff

All very helpful stuff. I've looked into the John Lewis warranty. Please correct me if I'm wrong but the JL warranty DOESN'T cover accidental damage, but an extended warranty WILL. Is that right or am I in cuckoo-land?0

hvaghela,
you are correct the JL warranty protects against breakdown, not accidental damage, but then you're house insurance usually covers accidental damage, or can be upgraded to do so for a few quid a year. The warranty companies will push the accidental damage cover, but frankly it is useless for most people.
John Lewis will price match any normal store, but they no longer price match internet/mail order deals, if its a national chain price they'll drop the price for everyone.Unless it is damaged or discontinued - ignore any discount of over 25%0 -
If you can find the plasma you want at RicherSounds Click Here you will find that the gauruntee is about 10% of the purchase price eg £2500 = £250.
If you haven't used richersounds before there are thing's you need to know about the gauruntee:
1. If you don't use it you can claim a full refund.
2. It will allow you to trade in your product & receive 50% of the purchase price.
or
3. Will gauruntee the product for the specified period.
Go check out richersounds, im sure you will not be dissappointed.0 -
Hi all,
I must agree with Tony_H 's comments regarding Richer Sounds.
I have a lot of AV stuff (tv, and more particularly dvd's, just wouldn't be the same without it) and it has all come from Richer Sounds.
Their extended warranties are very good value for money (imho) and the people that run my local store are very helpful without being pushy.
Give them a try.
Tony_H, You said
2. 'It will allow you to trade in your product & receive 50% of the purchase price.'
This is correct, but only if you decide to trade in the product within the first 12 months.
If you decide to trade in after the first 12 months there is a sliding scale for the trade in price.
It did used to be the case, that they would give you 50% of the purchase price, if you traded in anytime within the warranty period (normally 3 years)
Cheers
