Mileage Expenses

Hi all,

I am a passenger in a workmates van, We travel 505 miles a week and split the fuel costs 50/50.

He claims mileage @ 45p a mile and therefore avoids paying tax on some £270+ a week of his earnings. Can I make the same claim or am I unable to claim anything?

I would also like to point out that I spend up to £110 a week on fuel and have no way to prove this as he keeps all of the fuel receipts.

Please Help

Cheers.

It probably costs him more than that to keep it legal/on the road.

No you can't make a claim as it's not your vehicle.

Basically, he's taking you for a bit of a chump.

If you are a passenger why are you paying fuel costs? or is it 'car share'?

  • I don't have a driving licence so he is doing all the driving. He just asked me to pay him half the fuel to get to work.

This post doesn't make sense, to me. If it costs more than 45p a mile to keep the vehicle on the road (highly plausible) in what way is the driver taking the OP for a bit of a chump?

It's down to the OP whether he is being taken advantage of. If, as he implies, he is getting a lift to work and to the sites where he is needed for half the cost of the fuel, I would call that a total bargain, personally!

The van gets through £2.30 in diesel per mile?
    Hope over Fear. #VoteYes
  • Sorry, It works out as £227(ish) that he gets in mileage allowance.

I am also an idiot and realised it is 101 miles ONE-WAY per day, So 1010 miles per week (I hope I got that right haha)

It's just crazy that £110 a week is being spent and I am already being taxed on it as I can't claim it as an expense because obviously he can't provide a receipt.

Can you not alternate who fills the van up, so when you do it, you pay and get a receipt?

If he's claiming, then he pays up front. It's not fair of you're paying half and he gets reimbursed for the full amount. Or am I missing something?
  • Can he refuse you travel? If not then renegotiate! I also think he is taking the michael.
Don't trust a forum for advice. Get proper paid advice. Any advice given should always be checked
  • You could ask to split the costs 50/50 but with the rebate taken into account so you get some of the benefit as well...

But, the driver could then decide to be difficult about sharing.

Wouldn't you be better paying a certain amount per mile rather than paying for a fill-up directly?
