Your opinion on 2nd interview

Can second interviews mean the interviewer isn't sure about you, in all honesty? should I just ask outright?

I did a psychometric test at the first and a 'what would you write in this customer senario' half way through first interview and met key people (although granted not owners of the business) who went from laid back, serious to laid back again, felt I got their back up when I asked about targets, sort of got shouted down no that doesn't happen here! and they came out with the most random date when I asked about starting, so there is that wonder about being played, I know I'm quite suspicious! :D

I'm now aware of requirements to attend a 2nd interview (which wasn't explained but in reflection I didn't really ask) I'm wondering if that was because I didn't score highly enough on the psychometric test (I had previously been given the impression the score they got from the computer would determine the successful candidate  I won't use the exact words) but it had been plaguing me as I thought what an odd way to recruit, why not do the testing prior to even offering an interview, though I was grateful as they saved me last week so I'll always be thankful to them for that in another way, I chose the interview over second work trial basically because I wanted better for myself

Thing is I'm in bit of a dilemma now.. after the hold out I have now been offered a Temp to Perm role today with a company who could decide in a couple of hours literally whether to offer me (and a couple others! :)) a job, you know you go to these things with a well I've got nothing else for definite, oh my days, these jobs definitely like buses, thanks for tuning in I've been to second interviews in the past and sill not got the job so I'm aware it may not come to anything!

  • At a former client all potential employees had 4 rounds of interview/ selection - short telephone call, face to face, online test, 2nd face to face. For senior roles you may have a couple of more rounds

Many employers do multiple rounds of interviews, the more senior you get the more rounds you go through. First round you cover all the bases at a high level, identify each candidates strength and weaknesses. Those that look good you invite back in and either get a second persons opinion or probe the weaknesses more or get the line manager in if they werent there for the first round etc.

Sometimes its more of a split of one round for personality/fit type HR interviews and then another round which tests more technical skills.

Being invited to a second round really shouldnt be read as anything but positive, if they didnt like you they'd have declined you (or more commonly these days, just never spoken to you again)
