Salary overpayment help

Hi, I'm new here so apologies if this has been discussed before but I really need some advice. I finished a job with a company last Friday (22nd November) as I started a new job on Monday (25th November). As I had been paid on the 20th for the full month they said I would need to pay back the overpayment for the final week. I agreed this was fine and asked them to send me a letter or email with details of how to go about it, I received a letter today but they are asking me to pay back the gross amount. I queried this and they said that it is because this has been the cost to the company, I was under the assumption that I would only be paying back the net amount, can somebody tell me which is correct

You pay back the NET ONLY!
This is the money paid to you
I can not believe the amount of payroll depts what get this wrong!!
They need to run a payslip with a - gross figure that will give the right adjustment to the tax and ni and a - figure for you to pay back but like I say only NETWe’ve had to remove your signature. Please check the Forum Rules if you’re unsure why it’s been removed and, if still unsure, email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
You should only pay the net amount back - the employer will recoup the NI and tax overpayment via their year end Payroll P14 and P35 returns (i.e. it will show they have paid HMRC more than what was actually due and they will get a refund). Its amazing how these banks can't even do simple calculations correctly..............0

Gross less tax ands ni is what you are paid nothing more
They need to do a reverse payment for the over paid gross all in the - and then you get the net figure to pay backWe’ve had to remove your signature. Please check the Forum Rules if you’re unsure why it’s been removed and, if still unsure, email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0
