Should Scotland be an independent country?

It could of course take many years and lots of money to decommission Faslane as a base for nuclear subs so job losses may not be as high as predicted by some.0

What I don't want is for anymore of England's money to go in their coffers.
I am furious that the Scottish think it ok to allow their own people to have free university education but not the English, especially when any Tom, !!!!!! or Harry from Europe can go to one of their uni's for absolutely nothing to pay at all. Is that right or fair? No it is not.
Hopefully this will also stop Scottish MP's in our English government making decisions that are good for them and bad for England. We have had enough of their terrible politicians, like Gordon Brown, who have been a nightmare. Bog off the lot of you IMO.
Another little englander not letting reality or the facts get in the way of a xenophobic argument.
If you want socialist policies then it might be an idea to elect socialists to BRITISH Westminster rather than tories!
Also, Scotland funds the UK more per capita than the other participant nations, and gets less back. So Scotland presently funds England. OK you probably read otherwise in the Daily Mail but I'd really like you to behave as my tax is funding you.0 -
Free university education is a policy of the current Scottish government. If you want the same in England, then vote for a party who supports it.
FYI: there is no English government. Westminster serves the whole of the UK.
Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland also all have devolved administrations (each with various limited powers) - England currently does not, but if you want England to have a parliament, then vote for a party who supports that.
Furthermore; the SNP MPs at Westminster do not vote on English-only matters.
A nice reply, its also worth adding that SNP have no spongers in that unelected anachronism they call the House of Lords (that has no place in a democracy).0 -

Charming. I'd quote others' anti-Scottish bile but it's a few pages back and, frankly, reading them the first time around was exhausting enough. It's funny that we always tend to hear about Scottish people's so called anti-English agenda and yet, when discussions like this come up, we get gems like that and how we deserve to go bankrupt. I find the strong opinions (whether for or against) of English/non-Scottish folk quite interesting though.
I'm Scottish and leaning heavily towards to independence. I'm determined not to definitively say yes or no until closer to the vote; maybe someone will actually come up with some compelling reasons to stay in the UK by that time. So far though, everything I've heard boils down to "ooh, change is scary and think of all these horrible things that could maybe possibly happen" without much to back it up with.
I'm trying awfully hard not to get involved with any arguments here, but I'll just say this: as someone mentioned earlier on, Scotland tends to have very different social and political priorities compared to England. Personally, I'm tired of being affected by actions taken by Conservatives in an attempt to pander to English voters. As an independent country, that wouldn't happen, and for me (note: FOR ME. Personal opinion, not trying to persuade anyone one way or the other, yadda yadda) that will be a huge factor in making my decision.
Anyway, that's quite enough politics for me this evening.:beer:0 -

To be fair... there's a big problem with that idea! - there aren't really any political parties of any standing with socialist policies. The political landscape in England is very different to that which exists in Scotland.
Anyway, (back on topic!) Scottish independence is cross-party and no-party. The independence referendum is not a political vote or an election.0 -
If there is one point that has emanated from the discourse we in Scotland have been having for the past several years, it is that Westminster and its retirement home The HoL, does not serve the people of the UK, but instead sees its sole function as the 'establishment' of the UK and as its imperative, to maintain its status.
The politicos and their supporting staffers have as a priority 'self', followed by party bonding, followed by mutual preservation, whilst their constituents are merely those who dumbly pick up their tabs without question.
This will be blown out of the water by 18 September 2014 when Scotland resoundingly votes YES, because following from that Westminster will function only as the rump of the UK with Scotland and all of its resources disappeared over the horizon and only the super-heated south of England holding all of the funding it has soaked up.
Get real people, you can't say you haven't been told often enough you just ain't listening. We'll be happy neighbours and do what we can - but you need to shake the troughers out of your system. :beer:0 -

A close friend who's husband works at Faslane is voting yes as is her husband. They believe the future of our country is more important than his possible job loss.
There's nothing set in stone as far as jobs going as the scottish gov have said it will remain as a naval base.
Waiting for the doomsayers........
