hello, just how hard is it to get a job these days, im lucky and still employed (for now), however i work in the public sector which the government is getting rid of in my area next year, ending in march, but possibility of employment till November,

just wondering how bad it is out there

Pretty bad, 100-250 people for each job in my experience. Also the majority of the applications are very high as well.
Part time and temp jobs are also quite thin on the ground. Lots of jobs also pay less than JSA.
My advise would be to do everything to try and stay where you are or go with early retirement if your old enough.
  • Can you not go on a redeployment registar? A lot of public sectors don't " get rid" they redeploy. May not be the job you have but always a job.

VERY hard out there, lots of people being taken advantage off - unpaid work trials forget recruiting a Temp.., 2nd interviews when your not expecting another, mass targets (only been to one job where there hasn't been a must beat this target to stay in employment) not being told the truth before you're in the door

That said, I had a spurt yesterday, got called for a Temp job 4 months, possible second interview and assessment day for a government training programme with a year contract, if none of these pans out I'm seriously forgetting the UK considering work on a cruise liner, all in a day

I've applied for hundreds of jobs, keep renewing hope
Maybe we should go for more temp jobs I dunno but afraid all I've found is your asked not to attend if you can't commit to the duration, (yes not apply for any perm jobs!) this time around and when weighed up with they don't have to give a reference and it doesn't work both ways else you wouldn't be a temp in the first place, there is not much in it

I was in the public sector up until a month ago and now in the wilderness and believe me, it's very barren; also had a 90 day notice period and tried to get another job whilst working due to the old wives tale of easier to get another job when you're in a job but nothing.
Just had my first interview and realised I am battling against kids half my age, very disturbing but have to keep on trying.
The job centre advisor I have has been fantastic with me but after reading a lot of stuff on here about JC advisors, it's a lottery whether you get a good, bad or indifferent advisor.
Good Luck and don't give up.
  • I'm packing my job in in the summer to go travelling! Are things worse now than say mid-2011?

    Is this a bad idea?!
