references before offer?

They said the job would be boring for me so never offered it, took someone else on and the job was advertised again 3 months later.
I got turned down for having "too good of a skill set" and I would find it boring, 2 days shy of knowing I'd be made redundant. I didn't care, I needed a job. I got a job at the same place three months later in a higher position.
In response to the OP
My OH had a job offer this week, turns out they rang around her references first, before she could tell her boss that she'd had an offer (but not in writing at that point). I thought it was weird, but maybe that's a small business thing, thinking back I think my last employer was a small company and rang around first, any large company i've worked for seems to do it afterwards.Professional Data Monkey

Well not really the agency who had sent me to the interview told me the person left as they couldn't do the job :rotfl::rotfl:Must have been really boring then if the person they took on quit in such a short time. Sounds like you had a lucky escape
Same as another I went to at the same time as when I was looking for something new. Person started and after 6 weeks they were let go and I was asked would I attend a 2nd interview after they had said similar 'you would be bored etc' and I said 'no thanks' - Such a shame they couldn't get anyone good

Take your references off your CV if you have them on there. When asked for references (which should only ever be after a firm offer), give the HR details of the company you worked at, not the line managers. They only have to confirm the dates you worked there, no more.
Some places (NHS for one) will not take these references - they'll take one, if you worked at a massive company like Tesco or Wetherspoons but they will ask for someone else if both your references are of the nature "According to our records, Mr Jordo worked here between X and X, had no disciplinary records and left of his own accord."£2023 in 2023 challenge - £17.79 January0 -
Thanks everyone for the replies. Will tell everyone the eventual result when I know (gulp)0

So - just a wee update. Apparently - in my case at least - it means sod all. lol. There were only 3 people invited to interview at all and - from what I understand - references for all three candidates are being taken up as part of the selection process. So, rather than it being a good sign - its just something they do apparently.
Oh well. Heres hoping anyway.0 -
