I have just been offered a job subject to all the checks etc and satisfactory occ health clearance. I hace had sometime off for depression which was bought on by my current role. I am currently off sick and due to the situation I find myself in i can't return as it is that has caused my illness.

I know i have to declare this but I am just worrying they will withdraw the job offer

  • They can only withdraw the offer if it will directly affect your work.

For instance - if you are a midwife (I work in the NHS, so NHS examples!) and you have arthritic knees that don't allow you to bend down easily, you could have your offer withdrawn as there are no reasonable adjustments to your role that would save you from having to do this. As midwives spend a lot of time bending/crouching/kneeling, this probably would lead to an offer withdrawal. However if the same applicant was applying for a position in HR and could have reasonable adjustments made (closer parking spot, ergonomic chair) they would not have their offer withdrawn.

Is your condition going to affect your ability to work? I would guess no, but without knowing the nature of your future employment I couldn't say either way. I would imagine though it won't be a problem unless you're going into counselling or mental health nursing.

ETA - If you don't declare it, in the future if you need help for it, you'll find it a lot harder to access. It is in your best interests to declare it.

Thank you for your advice. It is the NHS I am going into. It won't effect my work, It has been caused by the stress of my current role.

That reassures me. I was worried about the reference stating about the number of days I have had off but my current HR won't disclose this and only send a very standard reference.

Best of luck with your new job. Just a bit of advise - be very careful about having time off due to sickness. The NHS have a very strict ruling regarding absences as my daughter has just found out to her dismay.

Despite having received an exemplary three months review, she had her employment terminated due to exceeding their absence targets. Unfortunately she caught several bugs in quick succession and although these were all covered by visits to the doctor this didnt matter. She was off sick on a Friday before a Bank Holiday Monday and this was counted as 4 days of sickness, even though she didnt work weekends or bank holidays.

Just goes to show that hard work and commitment counts for nothing!

I am determined that in my new role I am going to have a fresh start. I don't think I will have any problems with my previous mental health issues.

That's not NHS policy. If she had told her manager she was fit for work on the weekend it would only have been one day off.

Unless she'd had the Tuesday off sick too.

She was not told either verbally or in any handbook that she would have to ring in over the weekend. Anyway, her office is not open over the weekend.

She has an appeal date set this week so watch this space!

Received a letter from oh saying they had tried to contact me with no success I have heard nothin from them . They say to contact them ASAP as they have a query which maybe answered over the phone and
May avoid the need for an assessment in person

it could be something as simple as querying a vaccination date so I wouldn't worry too much. I moved from a band 2 to a band 4 post in the same department but still had to have all my vaccinations checked even though I've worked there 7 yrs!

    good luck x
