3 for 2 offers

I'm currently having a frustrating email conversation with Hobbycraft, having bought 7 items in their 3 for 2 sale this weekend.
The items were priced 3 * 4.00, 2 * 3.00, 2.50 and 1.00.
I got the 2.50 and 1.00 item for free. I expected to get a 4.00 item and the 2.50 item for free. Unfortunately I didn't notice until I got home.
They don't feel they have overcharged me. I'm tempted to return all the items then buy them again in three separate transactions.
I've had a similar experience in Blackwells bookshop where I bought 3 books each around 20.00 and 3 books each around 5.00 all in 3 for 2 offers and they couldn't understand why I was unhappy to only get 10.00 off my shopping. On that occasion, I did notice and put my purchases through as 2 separate purchases to get my 25.00 discount.
Has anyone else had similar frustrations? Is there a correct way that 3 for 2 should be applied?

It does usually say cheapest item free, I usually do separate transactions to get the best deal,0

Fair enough. I can imagine really annoying the queue doing that though.0

They do always specify it is the cheapest item you get free. You should always split out your items in separate transactions to make these deals work for you, if you are buying more than one 3 for 2 deal.0
