in Cutting tax
I have a part time job and am also self employed. The income from both for this tax year will be less than the tax threshold.I was given a BR code by mistake and when it was eventually sorted out I had already paid several hundred pounds in income tax.I would like some advice on how to get this money back.
I have noticed that my tax code on my payslip has an X in it ie 944L/X yet all the notifications I have recieved from IR give my code as just 944L
Thanks in advance

have you had only the one PAYE job since april 6th (or have you claimed any JSA )?
the 'X' means that your code is non cumulative0 -

Oh no it's not.
You are in a holding situation paying the correct tax each month since you had this X code but there does not appear to be any credit for the earlier overpaid tax.The only thing that is constant is change.0 -
Thanks for reply guys.I've only had this one PAYE job.I am paying tax on a month to month basis because when I got some overdue holiday pay I got taxed on it.
How can I get out of this situation?0 -
check you tax notification from HMRC to check there is nothing to indicate a non cumulative code
if everything is fine then contact your payroll people and ask them to check their HMRC notification.
otherwise phone HMRC and ask them, to send a notification to your company0 -
If you are certain that you are a non-tax payer, based on self emp profit and PAYE and you have no other taxable income including JSA, in this tax year, you can use 944L on cumulative basis. If there is a Tax Coding Notice that shows 944L already, you can show that to your employer. You can also ask the employer to check their system or ask HMRC to issue 944L on cumulative basis.
As soon as the cumulative code is operated, if you have overpaid due to the BR code and your holiday pay, you will get the in-year rebate. The rebate, backdated to April, will be issued along with your wages.
The X suffix is there to prevent any in-year refund or back tax from being issued or collected respectively. X suffix is usually the case when your tax code reduces, there is a big gap of no PAYE details or you have just started receiving more PAYE income from another job, State Pension, private pensions, etc.
I suspect that the BR code was used maybe due to lack of P45 and P46. When you start a new job, without any P45 from the current tax year, you must submit a P46.0 -
Thanks for reply-very comprehensive
I have contacted HMRC and they have confirmed that I should not be on the X code and are going to notify my employer.I have also spoken to my employer but from past experiences I know they are not very helpful and will not act quickly.
I suppose it will get sorted eventually but it would nice to get a rebate before Xmas
Are there any other steps I could take?
BTW I was TUPED to this company over a year ago and I have been doing the same job for over 8 years0 -
Your company must act on HMRC instructions (and not yours).
Depending upon it's size your employer will be informed electroncally
have you checked you last year's tax ?0 -
You can go back four years to claim tax back, unfortunately it is not six years anymore.
If during all the in-date years, your self-assessment tax returns had annual gross pay and tax figures from your job(s), as per your P60 (s), on them, you, very likely, would have received the refunds back already. If not, you need to amend your returns ASAP. If some or all of the previous in-date years were before you registered as self employed, you can simply send P60s with a cover letter to claim tax back.0
