Claiming mortgage mistake by Clydesdale Bank

Hi, I've just joined and find this forum so intersting and helpful. I was wondering if anyone can help me with a blip that Clydesdale bank have admitted to but I'm not sure I'm due anything. I received a letter from them saying I may be entitled to compensation as they had made an error with the morgage repayment calculation system in April 2009 which may have affected some customers by resulting in a capital shortfall. They tell me I may have been affected in this way:
1. Repayment amount may have been more than was needed to repay my mortgage within agreed time meaning I was overpaying unwittingly.
They say they fixed it but didnt tell us the nature of the error or the options available to us at the time. The Financial Conduct Authority has demanded they do so.
Problem is I'm hopeless at understanding this sort of stuff - I'm taking it they've done something wrong but are not being upfront and saying they owe me something but want me to work out what they've done and whether its affected me. Anybody else been contacted by them and if so, can you tell me how I would know if it has affected my mortgage. I want to claim but am unsure what I'd be claiming for - the blighters, they should write things in layman terms and just pay up if they know they've messed up. Thanks, and Hi everyone
