What would you do?

Morning all (just about!)

I'm after some advice re my work situation.

I am currently temping with a firm about 17 miles away, only been there 3 days so far but am enjoying it and have been made to feel very welcome by the lovely staff there. This job is only guaranteed until Xmas.

On Thursday afternoon I took the afternoon off (pre-arranged with the agency) to attend an interview at a more local firm, 10 miles away. This job is a new position that is guaranteed for two months with a possibility of going permanent if I do well. I was offered the job on the spot. I have accepted and informed the agency.

Now I had intended to work next week at the temp position then leave to start at the other job but....I received an invitation yesterday to attend an interview for yet another position that I applied for recently that is around the same distance from home. This position would be full time permanent which is better clearly than only being in a guaranteed job for 8 weeks or so.

I'm wondering what to do now, do I forget the temping job completely, giving a couple of days notice and attend this interview on Wednesday? I can't help feeling bad about letting them down especially as the people there have been so nice and welcoming.

I would be totally honest, say that you have an interview that would offer you a permanent role and you can't let that opportunity go, so would appreciate if you could take the time to go, and come before/after and work later/earlier to make up the hours to their convenience. I would come across as apologetic, saying that you don't like to let them down but you hadn't expected this but you feel you can't miss out on such an opportunity. If you have a specific task to do, I would offer to work on it for some hours at home. Anything to show commitment. They are likely to understand your position and show sympathy.

If you think you want the job apologise but go to the interview - people who hire temps are fully aware that many are after full time jobs and will give them priority.

If you're a temp you probably don't have a notice period. Just be honest and say you need X off for another interview, would they like you to work around that and then leave or to leave straight away?

You aren't being unreasonable, and you should go even if they kick up a fuss.

Permanent always trumps temp work for me. Just ask for a few hours off to attend the interview, you aren't letting anyone down at all only yourself if you don't attend.
