The everyday value ones, I think it was about 10-12 years ago? they was really cheap and great for big families. Lots if chip making!

A greengrocer probably, when I was a kid (40 years ago) we always had a big brown paper sack of spuds in the larder. Lasted weeks and weeks. Delivered over the shoulder of the greengrocer doing the weekly delivery rounds in his van (long before Ocado or Tesco ever dreamed of doing it). Elf and safety would problem require 3 men and a forklift now making it uneconomic, it weighed a ton!

In those days you could eat chips or buttery mash every day without getting too fat, I guess in reality we all used to work harder, not on computers!

Try a farm shop....I bought 25kg dirty spuds 2 wks ago for £6. They are really big too so won't be needing to buy baking potatoes. Dirty spuds keep for ages. I did buy the 4kg net sack of onions in Tesco last wk for £2, again they'll store for ages. F/Foods and Morrisons do a small sack....poss 7.5kg.
  • depends were u live but i live in wales and not far from me theres a retail park and theres a man with a van and he dose sacks of spuds for around £5 try looking at local markets/bootsales too some times theres fruit and veg boys

  • morrisons have 12.5kg of sapphire potatoes £4.99 not too sure about chip making as they go break up during boiling, but make lovely mash

I purchased 25kg for £6 from the greengrocer last month. Not the best, but decent enough. Would buy again. Keep your eyes peeled for similar local deals

Morrison sell cleaned ones that don't keep all that well. but i head to farm shops and get dirty sacks for £7 (Marfonas - that M&S stock at silly prices)...

they do still exist - just look out while in the darkest depths of the country...

This is so true, washed don't keep as long, same goes for carrots.
I had to laugh a few weeks ago my local market had very cheap dirty pots and I stocked up, overheard a woman telling her OH to put them back because they were dirty, I then watched whilst she paid twice as much for washed ones.

  • I noticed a fruit and veg stall on Skipton market selling them for £5 something a sack yesterday. Sadly we had gone through on the bus and I didn't fancy lugging a sack back that way!!
