Council tax band review increased

Hi I'm after a bit of advice...

My boyfriend and I moved into our first home in December 2011. It is a new build property and we were the first owners. We were billed our council tax as a band A however recently have relieved a letter saying that the initial valuation was incorrect and it has been increased to band C.

After looking on this site I checked our neighbours and other identical houses do infant appear to be a C so that is fair enough. However we are being back billed for the increase since April of this year, can they do that?!

This seems a little unfair as the mistake was not our fault and we had no idea that we were in the wrong band. We are a young couple and the increase in bill going forward is bad enough without having to pay retrospectively!

Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks guys x

If the band was deemed to be incorrect then the valuation office can correct the band retrospectively.

If the valuation office alter the band then the council are required to alter the council tax charge appropriately.
I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.
