Shaky Voice in Interview

What can I do about a shaky voice in an interview? Its not that I feel particularly nervous or afraid. Family have noticed it happens when I am excited about something.

Eat something half hour before you go in. Something reasonably big to keep your stomach busy.

Breathe well, stay calm, talk slower and clearly and have confidence in yourself!
Practise recording yourself until you get it right!

    Good luck!
  • when offered a drink, always ask for a glass of water. take it in and then before answering a question that you have not rehearsed, take a slow sip of water. it gives you a little thinking time and wets the pallet.

remember to swallow before answering though, as spraying the interviewers with water might get you remembered but not for the right reasons.

As near to going in as you can, sing along out loud to something up tempo - it exercises the vocal cords which can become tense with stress.

Talk with the receptionist - even if it's just about the weather or the view or whatever - to get the cords moving and smile whilst talking.

Regardless though, interviewers expect some nerves so will make allowances... just tell them what they need to know and they will be so interested they will listen to the content and not the voice alone.

  • I have a (fairly minor but much worse if I'm nervous) speech impediment, and I was taught to count to three in my head before answering. It's not long enough for the interviewers to notice something amiss, but just gives you a beat to keep yourself calm.

I hugely recommend joining a local toastmasters (speaking club). They are very friendly, and mine helped me ace the interview for my current job.

There are a couple of people in our club who would hesitate to ask for things in a shop, they were so terrified. It has been wonderful seeing them develop their skills - both in speaking, and in overcoming those inhibitions.

Try yoga breathing or breathing from your belly. Helps keep the throat open and lowers the tone of your voice.

    Also helps with snoring...
