Can my wife and I get seperate mortgages?

Hi All,

I am looking to get a new mortgage. I was wondering if my wife and I can get seperate mortgages rather than a joint mortgage?

The reason I don't want to get a joint mortgage is because my wife is not on the electral roll (and cannot be because she is not currently a british citizen) and I believe this affects her credit rating. My credit rating is strong so feel we could borrow more/better rate if I stay seperate to her.

We do share our current account so are financially connected, therefore not sure if her credit rating will be taken into account regardless if we take a joint mortgage or seperate ones.

Are you looking for a remortgage on your existing property or a mortgage on a new property.

You can only take a joint mortgage on a jointly owned property and if she satisfies the lender's requirements (usually visa with a certain amount of time remaining) you should not be prevented if she is not on the voter's roll.

As long as she has a bank account and a long enough residence to have a credit history, you should be fine. A lower loan to value also helps.

You may be better discussing with a whole market broker, rather than the "computer says no" brigade.
