Interview help-question about why dismissed from last job?

I'm after some tips please after being released from my contract unexpectedly and now need to find alternative work.
In early November I was dismissed through no fault of my own.
Basically I took on a very underperforming team after winning a promotion but despite delivering some successful projects during the 6 months of my new role despite my efforts I could not turn things around and although no errors could be attributed to me personally I was ultimately responsible for the team performance which I accept.
I also had no notice nor chance to review things-all very sudden.
Moving on I will need at some point to explain this to potential employers and although I plan to be truthful I cant get my head around actully explaining this in an interview situation.

So I'm after tips please on how I can help myself by explaining this in a positive light -if there is one!

Thanks Al

  • You've pretty much covered it there. You led some successful projects but you weren't able to 'turn around' the performance of the team overall in the short space of time. You've taken this onboard and have addressed the areas for improvement.
Having never been in that situation that's what I'd say but maybe someone will come along with something more concrete for you. Just make sure you don't blame your old boss or team!

Is being released from your contract the same as being dismissed? The first indicates a mutual agreement, the second indicates Gross Misconduct particularly as you've mentioned no notice given.

Will you be asking your previous employer for a reference? Be aware that what you say might not be what the employer says.

  • Check what your reference will say. If neutral, I would say that despite several very successful projects after your promotion, you were let go as a result of a restructure.

Even better would be to say despite several very successful projects in the end your recommendation was for a full restructure of the team.
