About one third of all water used in the home goes down the toilet. A save-a-flush can save up to 1 litre of water per flush. A save a flush is a plastic bag containing a harmless polymer silica mixture which swells on contact with water and takes up some of the room in the toilet cistern so that when it refills it doesn’t use as much water.
i couldn't find any previousposts where northumbrian water offer free ones to their customers so here we are, it does seem an awful lot of other water suppliers do to - check your local one.
people also put random objects in their cystern to have the same effect, bricks etc...i imagine they'd go mouldy so hope this helps someone

Don’t ask what the world needs. Ask what makes you come alive, and go do it.
Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.

I must add..... this has been posted somewhere before...
But the number of times I get called out to people who have got toilets not flushing things away properly... hardly money-saving as they then get a plumbers bill
The best thing I can do with these bags is cut them in half with a stanley knife and throw them in the bin....... which in turn fills up the landfill sites... hardley very environmental!!!
Modern toilets are designed to use the water that they flush down the pan.
Reducing the water used reduces the effectiveness of the flush
Placing these things in the cistern reduces the water flushing things away, which means you may have to flush twice using more water than one flush anyway
Just a bit of advice0
