Job offer from nhs

Options
I have been offered a job in the nhs. I need a drb check , id check, both of which are being done. I also have to see occupational health about my immunization for mmr, hib b, bcg and chicken pox. My doctor has no records of any immunisation I have had as they are on paper from when I was small and could have possibly got lost. I had a blood test yesterday to check for mmr and hopefully chicken pox. Will the occupational health give me any vaccinations I need and will I have to wait the 6 months (the hib b is done in 3 lots as far as I know) before I am cleared to work for them. Any advice would be great thank you x

What sort of job in the NHS?

I worked in the NHS for some years and have never had MMR or BCG vaccinations - but I wasn't meeting patients.
  • Many congratulations on the job offer. If you have no immunity the NHS, and therefore your employing occupational health dept should offer you the relevant jabs to pass you fit for post. They should then offer you top up jabs as required to maintain your immunity, that's what they did for me. It should not delay your start date.
  • I have been offered a job as housekeeper on a ward. Really looking g forward to it. Hopefully my references are good. My drb check will be OK as I had one when I worked in a school. I am going tomorrow for my passport to be renewed as I do not have anything to prove who I am as I do not drive. It is just the vaccinations that could delay things. That is why I went for the blood test myself so I can show occupational health if my MMR is up to and if it is not they can give me the shot without having to wait.

    Thank you for replying x
  • Hi WW, I think I may be able to help (I've worked for the NHS as an agency worker in the past.) First thing don't panic. The normal process can last up to 6 weeks, normally its down to the DRB and References (nothing in the NHS moves quickly), so you'll have plenty of time for vaccinations. As for ID, I know you're renewing your passport, but normally a passport and two other forms of ID (i.e something from HMRC and a bank statement will do.)

I'm actually surprised that you filled in occupational health and ID checks after the interview, normally they do this at the interview. I also have an interview for the NHS on Monday (catering), so fingers crossed. :)
  • I am going on Friday for my I'd check, have passport, bank statement and mortgage statement (from the list).
I set the drb check up myself on Monday and I have 2 weeks to send the form into occupational health so hopefully my blood test results will be back so I can send them with the form.

I am more anxious now than when I was having my interview .

I hope you are successful with your own job interview on Monday :j

I've also been offered a job in the NHS. I agree that this part is more stressful than the interview. Getting my current manager to do the reference was the most difficult part. Nagging them to do it while being mindful that I didn't want to !!!! them off too much was difficult.

I have been told that immunities will be checked after starting. That is usually the way it works. And then they immunise you against anything you're not already immune to. In my last job I never did become immune to hepatitis B even after the injections but it doesn't seem to have mattered.
  • Did my id check today, everything OK. Got my blood results back and I am immune to rubella, measles and chicken pox and I had my bcg(tb) in school. So I may only need mumps and his b vaccinations. Also got measured for my uniform as well. Only waiting on one more reference and a appointment from occupational health :-)
  • Quick update , had my oh appointment today. Needed MMR jab and his b. Got another appointment for 9th January and then they will clear me to start work :j
  • Start in my new job on the 20th January :j
